During the blocktober, I wanted to challenge my level design skills. To do it, I planned to blockout some small levels for a very classic first person shooter.
I started he project by creating a FPS controller & basic AI with various free assets from the Unity Asset Store.
The gameplay is very simple. The player can shoot, run, crouch, reload and throw grenades.
There's few ressources that the player can grab which are life, ammo and grenades.
The goal was to create interresting levels during blocktober with those simples mechanics and basics AI.
What I learnt :

Learnt many tips to make an interresting combat encounter

Learnt a lot about the theory of shape in level design (How can you use the shapes of the level to triggers specific behaviours on the player)

Worked a lot about pacing in a level

Improved my skills to script & design interesting events that guide or inform the player about something useful or needed to complete the level

Learnt many tips to create a better blockout that can be understood by anyone in a team

Understood the importance to create a "believable space"

Learnt to create space which offers multiple choices that the player can easily anticipate

Learnt the importance of the metrics to improve the workflow of the level creation

I wanted to create a daily good level, but a good level need a lot of iterations before being fun

Learnt that It's hard to create a level without previously prepared a bit of documentation about it (references, sketch, etc.)
The levels
Here's a selection of the best levels created during blocktober.
Each level is presented with a gameplay video and somes screenshot of the level from the engine and from the player perspective.
Subway
This level takes place in a subway attacked by enemies. The goal here was to create a level where the player traveled through a subway station until he reached the underground level of the station.
Factory
This level takes place in a factory. My goal here was to focus on the combat encounter. This was also one of the first levels made during blocktober.
Office
This level takes place in a work office attacked by enemies. The goal here was to create a level where the player move inside and outside a building.
